Maze Reading Passages Assessments

Maze Passages Reading Assessment measures overall reading skill and can be administered to multiple students simultaneously. This assessment is available for first through sixth grades. Each grade is sold separately.

During the assessment students are presented with a 2-3-page passage representing the level of difficulty expected for each year of competence. From each passage, every seventh word has been deleted; in the place of each blank, 3 possible replacements are shown, only one of which is semantically tenable. Students read silently for 2.5 minutes while restoring blanks. The score is the number of correct replacements.

Reading Passages Fluency and Word Counts (RPWC)

These assessment tools are used to monitor students’ overall progress in reading for grades 1 – 7. RPWC is administered individually. In general education classrooms, students take one RPWC test, called probes, each week. Special Education students take two RPWC probes each week. Each RPWC probe uses a different passage of equivalent difficulty at the same grade level. The student reads from the student copy for 1 minute while the tester scores the student on the examiners copy. The score is calculated by taking the cumulative word count up to the last word read in 1 minute and then subtracting student errors from the total.
